Here at CHS, many students see that art is unrecognized and undervalued, but senior Brooke Kemp doesn’t let that stop her from doing what she loves. She has been involved with art for seven years and really enjoys it.

Kemp said, “Ever since I was a kid, my mom was really big in art, so she would draw extra pictures in our coloring books, so it would be original,  then it kind of got me on to it.”

She has been engaged ever since elementary, but feels that once she got to high school that it has gotten more serious. Her teachers have challenged her to go past her limits and try new things hat she never thought she could do before. She didn’t really have a good connection with her elementary school teacher, but her high school teachers really helped her and made a bond between the two of them which really impacted and benefited Kemp’s interest and desire for art.

She also added that, “I’m not really a doodler, I never sit in class and doodle, but at home I have canvases and I paint, but I sit down and do like actual paintings.”

For Kemp, this is a way to get away from everything, “It’s also your feelings, so like your putting all your feelings really on a piece of paper or whatever your putting it on” Kemp says.

She has always done really cool charcoal pieces of animals, but this year her teacher Mr. Hoopes challenged her to try pastels, she said “It’s like charcoal but colored.”

She said that Mr. Hoopes pushed her to go further and “I would always say I can’t do this and I was always so negative towards myself and he would tell me to go take a walk, and that I could do it.”

One of her biggest achievements throughout high school was being entered into the Mahoning County Local Art show and winning first and second place. Kemp plans on going to Youngstown State University for double major in graphic design and interactive design so like a bachelor in fine arts and then business administration.

Overall, Brooke Kemp is a very complex and creative artist that wants to pursue big in her future. She has big plans that she hopes to accomplish.
