May is quickly approaching. With birds chirping and the much-anticipated sunshine finally making a reappearance, it’s that time of the year again…

Promposal season.

Whether you find them utterly adorable or positively cringey, promposals are a tradition here at Canfield High School, and students are putting more elbow grease into them every year.

Take it from senior Lexi Denney, whose boyfriend asked her last week.

“He bought me a stuffed cat and a necklace, and wrote ‘you’ve cat to go to prom with me right meow’ on a poster. Then he got me tickets to see Beauty and the Beast,” Denney said adoringly.

Since Denney’s boyfriend, T.J. Carr, attends Columbiana High School, she asked him to come to Canfield’s prom herself.

“I dressed up like a panda and said, ‘It would be unbearable to go to prom without you! If you say yes, it will be pantastic! I decorated a box with pandas and filled it with candy,” she said.

Likewise, junior Luke Seifert put a considerable amount of work into promposing to his girlfriend, Katy Smith.

“She really likes cacti and stuff like that, so I went to Home Depot and bought some succulents. And then I made a sign that said, ‘Prom would succ(ulent) without you. It cost me about twenty dollars altogether.”

When asked how taxing the process was, Seifert admitted, “On a scale of one to ten, it was probably an eight.”

So why did Seifert put so much work into this ritual? The answer is quite simple to him: “I wanted the way I asked to be special, because prom is a very big thing at this school.”

While Lexi and Luke seem more than happy to spend their time and money on a promposal, others criticize the effort required to ask a simple question.

“I just think it’s ridiculous that people have to be excessive about it,” said junior Eva Lamberson. “It’s a sad reflection on our society that we can’t be straightforward about asking someone to prom.”

But Denney concluded on a less skeptical note, “I think it’s nice to surprise the person you care about and make them feel special.”
