Socks. Check. Underwear. Check. T-shirt, shoes, jeans. Check, check, and check.

Some of you may go through a similar process the night before a school day or even the day of. However, it’s a little different story for two Canfield High School seniors, Hamzah Hassan and Anthony Joseph.

“It’s a way to express myself. Everyone does it in a different way, like in sports and artistically. I guess me and him [Anthony Joseph] do it by dressing up. Some people do it to impress others, we do it because it’s like a hobby to us,” said Hassan.

They both agreed that they dress up because they have self confidence. They’re not afraid to dress up and look good. On a scale of 1 to 5, they feel no pressure whatsoever when deciding what to wear.

Hassan said when he was younger people had the perception that if you dress up you were looked upon as a “try hard” because they weren’t wearing what everyone else was wearing.

As far as their wardrobes go, both agreed that they lay out everything the night before.

“I’m not a morning person, so I iron my clothes the night before,” said Hassan. It takes them around 10 minutes to get everything prepared and laid out.

When I asked them if they had a closet full of suits, dress pants etc. or sweatpants and t-shirts they both agreed without any hesitation they would prefer the closet filled with suits.

Anthony started this trend the first day of freshman year thinking he doesn’t need to please anyone and go into the year with a confidence boost and a new look.

Hassan, however, started sophomore year. He said, “As high school went on he gained confidence and that kind of led to me not caring what other people think.”

Joseph said he has more of a businessman “New Yorker” style, while Hassan dresses in more of a relaxed European or Miami look.

They both agreed dressing well is something fun to do, and they can bounce ideas back and forth.

When 22 Canfield high school male students were asked what they considered “dressing up” there was a 40% tie between “khakis, polo/button up” and “dress pants, shirt, and tie.” Remaining was sweatpants and t-shirt with 4.5% and full suit also at 4.5%.

For women, 68% of them said “a dress and heels” was considered dressing up while 27% said “jeans and a t-shirt,” and finally 4.5% said “sweatpants and a hoodie.”

Also on the survey was on a scale of 1 to 5 rating the amount of pressure students feel when it comes to dressing up for school – 5 being highly pressured and 1 being totally relaxed. Out of 22 men, 48% of them marked a 1. However, women feel more pressure, as 43% of them marked a 3.

Taylor Watkins a senior at Canfield High School who plans to major in fashion merchandising and styling explained why these results were different.

“Girls want to look cute, dolled up and get dressed up to go out. Guys on the other hand would just want to hang out with their friends and feel relaxed with sweatpants and a t-shirt,” said Watkins.

She said girls don’t necessarily dress to impress others, but rather to just impress and feel good about themselves.

Watkins gave some simple ways for girls to adjust their style to look good but still be comfortable.

She said, “If you’re wearing joggers, then tying a flannel around your waist is something easy and simple.”

However, if you are going for a dressier look, then she recommends bracelets as an easy accessory to go with jeans and boots.

For guys, Watkins said that shoes play a major role in their outfits. Also, for a date, she recommended that a guy’s hair should look nice; he should wear a pair of jeans, a button up and he should always look like he tried to present himself.
