Speech and Debate is an extracurricular comprised of various categories with many different objectives. This club is a mix of all different grade levels and personalities. Among the unique personalities is junior debater Lucas Tomory.

In a category called Lincoln-Douglas, Tomory works hard to do well.

“Lincoln-Douglas is a one-on-one debate which is heavily influenced by elements of philosophy and primarily logic,” said Tomory.

The goal of the 45 to 60 minute debate is to find the best resolution to the topic given.

“Where the philosophy comes in, is like the best thing we can try to achieve, and we do this by a value criterion. For example, upholding a social contract, or a constitution, in order to achieve a legitimate government,” described Tomory.

Tomory has had competitive success at the Speech and Debate competitions. Debating for close to three years now, Tomory has only improved from year to year.

Tomory said, “I have placed, and I have almost made it to State.”

But the category does come with some obstacles.

“Writing cases is very time-consuming and also just finding things that support what you want to talk about, and then finding some old dude, as in a philosopher, that says something that lines up with what you are talking about,” said Tomory.

Tomory finds support through his brother, and cannot wait for his future in Speech and Debate.

“I have a whole other year so that should be fun,” Tomory concluded, his mind already on the successful senior year that awaits him.
