Kate Sahli, a junior at Canfield High School, describes herself as a hard working girl with set goals. She has been playing basketball since she was 8 years old.

She began playing at the YMCA for 2 years. Then, she went on to Mr. Rubin’s basketball travel team for 5th and 6th grade. However, it began to get more competitive once she reached middle school basketball.

As Kate got older, she began to feel the pressure of becoming the best player she could be. Due to this, she saw the most growth the summer before 8th grade.

Kate mentioned, “In 7th grade, I played for the social aspect, and I had a lot of fun with my friends. However, In 8th grade, I actually wanted to be good and contribute to the team. I felt like I needed to be better than my opponents, and I strove to achieve that.”

In high school, Kate played JV her freshman year. I asked her about her experience jumping from middle school to high school basketball. Kate said, “It was more competitive and tough. The coaches will correct you and make fun of you, but that’s just because they care.”

She definitely struggled once she made the jump to high school.

She said, “I didn’t even score once the first two weeks of practice. But as time passed, my confidence began to grow.”

Her sophomore year, Covid affected the team as a whole.

Kate said, “We never knew when we were going to be able to play, and our schedule was changing every day. We got shut down once from a positive test, and that pushed everything back. But in a way, it taught us how to adjust and make the most out of the situation we were given.”

As Kate moves into her junior year, she plans on seeing a lot of playing time on the court and believes her team will have a great season.

She mentioned, “We have put in endless hours during the off-season and grown together as a whole. Our skill has grown, but so has our character.”
