For the graduating class of 2018, the time to choose a career path is quickly approaching. For Canfield senior Olivia VanDevender, the choice is clear.

“I’m going to Bowling Green University,” she said.

VanDevender expressed excitement about the university’s beautiful campus and unique location between Ohio and Michigan.

When asked about her intended major there, she was just as decisive: “Bowling Green has a really cool flight program. They have their own run strip and their own planes on campus which I think tags along well with me being in the Army."

VanDevender joined the Army in April of 2017, and recently graduated from Basic Training in August. She says this unique path has greatly influenced her decision-making about her major.

“I like it because I think it’s something not a lot of people do. Even with the Army, not a lot of girls enlist or pursue that type of profession. But, I’ve never really been a run-of-the-line type of person,” she continued. VanDevender’s uniqueness is hard to contest, as she takes part in both marching band, lacrosse, and soccer at CHS.

VanDevender ended on a hopeful note for her future: “With the Army in tandem with the flight program, I could easily translate that into a civilian job at American Airlines or flight technology in that field, which is huge.” She anticipates a great career with the Army as her guide.
