Maria Laura Ortiz
She’s taken a risk, to face all by herself, while she leaves her friends and family behind. She came here to learn our language, and to experience things that could happen only once in her lifetime. Her name is Maria Laura Ortiz, but she prefers to be called Laurita. Her name, Maria, comes from her grandmother who lives back in her home town of Tocopilla, in Chile.

Before she even came here to The United States, she had only been speaking english for a year. For only speaking it for a year, her english is broken but she knows how to get her point across.

Laurita says that, “Tocopilla is small, is dessert, but here in Canfield, is green”.

She told me that her reasoning for coming to our country is because, she likes “english and it is very important because in Chile, when you are working, you don’t know if the person you work for speaks english or spanish, so it is good to know both languages”.

While speaking english in work environments she needs to know both languages, but when she is at home with her friends or family, none of them speak english therefore, using spanish is how they communicate.

Back in her hometown, she lives with her mother, Gladys, her dad, Herman, and her grandmother, Maria. She does have two sisters and one brother. Her brother, Javier and her sister Gabriela live in the city of Antofagasta, which is north of her city, Tocopilla. While her other sister, Camila, who is soon to be a mother, lives in La Serena. La Serena is south of Tocopilla.
