Football, basketball, soccer, baseball, and softball are just a few of the many sports you can letter in at Canfield High School. But sophomore Kaleigh Ceci won’t be lettering in a sport this year, she’ll be lettering in Speech and Debate. This year was a breakout year for Kaleigh. As a sophomore, there aren’t high expectations to do extremely well in speech. But that’s not true for Kaleigh. She has placed in the top three at almost every tournament, she has made it to multiple finals rounds and she even won a tournament at JFK. Ceci explains that as a freshman, she wasn’t quite sure if she wanted to do speech, especially because of how everyone perceives it. People assume that all you do is wake up early and talk in front of a large crowd, but that’s not the case at all. To Kaleigh, speech is much more than just waking up early and competing at a school all day. She says, “I remember watching the humor final round at Canfield and I told my little sixth-grade self that one day I was going to be competing in that humor final round,  and I got to do that this year, so that was a huge accomplishment for me.” Kaleigh also adds that she has made a new family through speech. She has met so many people from different schools and she doesn’t regret her choice when she decided to join speech. Ceci says, “It can get pretty crazy, but I love it.” - Sophia Campos
