The Cardinal

As summer comes to a close, many students around the country groan as school kicks back into gear. For senior Colin Hritz, it is just the opposite. The start of school for Colin starts the greatest time of year: football season. Just last fall, the Cardinals leaped the expectations of many, coming only 4 points away from competing in the state semifinals. Expectations coming into the 2018 season were lower, as the team lost 7 starters on defense and 8 on offense. Hritz and the other seniors had the task to prove the media in the area wrong.

When Hritz was asked about the expectations of the ability of the team to reload, he answered, “We have a lot of seniors coming up this year that could’ve played last year. Obviously it hurts that we lost our secondary and linebacker experience, but I have trust that we can reload and get on track quickly.”

When it was noted that WKBN’s Dana Balash predicted that the Cardinals would leave the 2018 season with a 5-5 record, Hritz quickly responded, “I’m sure that they know we lost a lot of talented players, but it is our job to prove ourselves again as one of the best teams in the area.”

Hritz believes that some of the pressure was taken off after a great first week performance by the team against Louisville, an established football program. Canfield won by a score of 21-14. On August 31st, the Cardinals defeated the Alliance Aviators by a score of 35-0. The hot start certainly increased confidence in not only Hritz but the rest of the program. The Cardinals take on the Chardon Hilltoppers at home Friday, September 7 and look to extend their perfect season.
