There are many Speech and Debate categories at Canfield High School including but not limited to Declamation, Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Informative Speaking, International Extemporaneous speaking, Public Forum debate, and Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

Out of all of these different events Camryn Heldreth picked Program Oral Interpretation, or POI for short.

POI is an event that involves the use of poetry and prose in order to tell a story.

Cam said, “It uses both prose and poetry together to tell a story. You have to have at least 200 words of poetry and you can have multiple pieces of prose either as a story or a theme. Speeches are about 10 minutes or about 1,300 words.”

Cam believes Speech and Debate can be an extra curricular that can be fun, fulfilling, and help you grow as a person.

Cam said, “Yes I do have fun and I also have enjoyed the competitive success i have hand along my adventure known as Speech and Debate. I think it has helped me grow as a person my speaking ability especially has greatly improved overall. My confidence has grown because I have become a better speaker.”

Cam continued, “Also the interactions with different people at tournaments have helped me grow and develop as a person.”

Cam also believes there is a good coaching staff for the team overall.

Cam said, “I think the majority of coaching staff for the team is well-equipped to be able to greatly benefit students. Quite a few of them are past competitors who know the ins and outs of every category which can help students find more competitive success.”

“I believe anyone who has any thoughts whatsoever about joining the team should strongly consider it just because of how much it can help you and benefit you as a person,” she concluded.
