“It’s probably one of the most fun activities I’ve done in high school. It’s really really low stress,” senior Hamzah Hassan explained.

Academic Callenge has been a growing activity for recent years, however this year it has exploded with enthusiasm from the students here at Canfield High School.

“Academic challenge is basically a type of competition where we meet up with other teams in the district and it tests your general knowledge about stuff,” Hassan said.

At first glance, one may stereotype this group as “nerds”; however, there’s much more to these students and this activity.

“It’s a really fun activity it’s not really serious in any way it’s really laid back and fun. Usually after games and stuff we go out to eat or before practices we order pizzas. It’s just a friendly atmosphere all around,” Hassan continued.

The competitions they attend, while casual, is similar to the atmosphere you would experience at a sporting event.

“The meets are really fun, the team laughs a lot, it’s not super serious,” Anna Osborne, another team member, added.

Just like a sports team they have bonded in a way that is best seen through their time spent together and their activities before and after practices and meets.

“Sometimes we stay after school and play card games and before the season starts we have practice almost every Wednesday so we usually have a lot of fun doing that,” Osborne recalled.

As Coach Smotrilla added, “ We actually do have a lot of fun! If the school can’t get here until four we order pizza and eat pizza until they can get here.”

For the team members, the experience has not only been an enjoyable one, but a memorable one.

“There’s not one thing that I don’t like about it. It’s really laid back,” team member Max Lee recalled.

Hassan summed up the season with a final statement, “When it gets really close to the end, well, it gets really hype.”
