It’s half way through the season of the Canfield boys soccer team and nothing seems to be going their way.
After beginning the first half of the season with a record of 2-6-1, the boys soccer team needs to turn the season around quickly. They still have the whole second half of their season for improvement and strengthening their team.
After losing a pretty big senior class last year, the boys have a lot of young players on the field this year.
Coach Christian Silvestri said, “We have many sophomores playing at the varsity level which is a good thing. They will continue to improve and develop over the next couple of years.”
We also asked coach Silvestri what the main issue was after beginning the season 2-6-1, and he said, “The intensity level. We have many talented players on the team, but the energy just doesn’t seem there.”
Senior Captain Aren Villano agreed with coach Silvestri as he mentioned how the intensity level just isn’t there.
Villano said, “ It’s an easy fix. We just need all of our eleven players on the field to want it more than the opposing team’s eleven players. That’s it. We’ve worked extremely hard preseason, beating big teams out of Akron and Cleveland. We just got too want it more.”
Villano also said, “We’ve had some tough losses early in the season, but those are in the past. We look forward from here on out.”
The Canfield boys soccer team has eight more regular season games on the schedule, all of which are big conference games.
We asked senior captain Jake Fay what these next eight games are like; he said, “All of these games are huge. The remaining games we have on our schedule are all rivalry conference games, especially Boardman and Austintown. Winning these games plays a major roll in playoffs. These games will decide where we will be placed in the playoffs.”
The boys are very excited for the rest of their season, despite the fact of having a losing record.
Captain Nick Goodrich said, “I know our record looks bad, which honestly can be a good thing. Being an underdog is perfectly fine. Our main goal is to take every game one by one, and too come out with the dub. We have everything we need to complete this job, and now we just have to execute it.”
