This past Sunday, Cleveland Browns kicker; Zane Gonzalez missed a total of four field goals that would have led the Browns to beat the New Orleans Saints. The Browns have famously lost a record breaking amount of games in the past three seasons. Gonzalez missed two point after attempts (PAT) and two field goals, the second which was the game tying field goal.

Zane Gonzalez in the first two games of  the season totaled for 5 missed field goals. Four against the Saints and had one blocked against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The blocked field goal against the Pittsburgh would have won them the game, but instead the contest ended in a tie.

After Gonzalez’s absolutely horrible showing, even Saints kicker Wil Lutz walked over to a saddened Gonzalez hanging his head and gave him a pep some kind words to try and raise his spirits. No matter what the facts stand and those missed field goals are what costed the Browns the game.

The following Monday the browns worked out a handful of kickers. Later that day, they signed a new kicker; Greg Joseph. He has never once kicked a field goal in the NFL.

A statement was released after the Saints v.s. Browns game saying that the then Browns kicker Zane Gonzalez was suffering from a groin injury during the game, causing him to miss four field goals. Browns head coach, Hugh Jackson said, “I knew nothing about an injury whatsoever so that was new to me.”

With the news of an injury surfacing, the Browns better hope Hugh  Jackson is telling the truth about not knowing about an injury. Pro Football Talk’s; Mike Florio stated, “If Gonzalez was injured, he can’t be cut without an injury settlement or placement on injured reserve. And if the Browns insist that Gonzalez was healthy, the stage could be set for an injury grievance.”

If the Browns knew nothing about the injury and then proceeded to fire him, then he did indeed deserve it. For the past two seasons, Gonzalez made a total of $530,294 from his Browns salary. Now making that much money is absurd when you cannot perform your job. Therefore, Gonzalez deserved to be cut because of the missed field goals.

Now if the Browns indeed did know of the groin injury, then Zane Gonzalez had an excuse to miss those field goals and should not have been playing in the game. Also if the Browns knew, Gonzalez has every right to sue them. It is not fair for him to be responsible for kicking field goals when he is not at his best.

The Browns are set to face the New York Jets on Thursday night football this week. Looking for their first win in the past two seasons, they have newly signed kicker Greg Joseph will hopefully be able to perform better than Zane Gonzalez did last week against the Saints. The Cleveland Browns are famous for losing and this season they are trying to turn it around.
