Ballet Western Reserve, a local ballet company located in Downtown Youngstown has a performance coming up in March. Throughout the year they do a total of three shows. The Winter show differs between storybook ballets. The Spring show is called “Spring Gala” and is a recital of all different styles. But the March show is the most contemporary of them all. This show is cleverly named “Building Art” because it takes place in the BWR facilities.

In this show you will see many different pieces from the BWR staff, and students. Each staff member has choreographic freedom of the style of dance they would like to do. This way they are allowed to be creative in their dances. In years past, they have even tapped with cardboard boxes on their heads! Recently, BWR has also let the company students choreograph dances as well. This is a really great learning experience for them to make a dance on their own, choose the music, teach their peers, and have it ready to be perform.

Each year Ballet Western Reserves’ “Building Art” has a different theme. The themes have ranged from “magic”, to “emotions.” This time around it is based off of old BWR photographs. The teachers found a box of these photographs in their storage and are now basing their dances off of what they think the meaning behind the photograph is. They are calling it “Old Works Revisited.”

This performance isn’t just to showcase the Ballet Western Reserve students, but also other local artists. Around the building you will find a mix of local artists selling their paintings, drawings, and photographs. You will also be able to see live performances of bands from the Mahoning County. The food is prepared from a local restaurant as well. Overall this performance is a great way to bring the arts community together in Youngstown.

Building Art will take place at 218 West Boardman Street in Youngstown. It is taking place at 6:30-10 p.m. on March 30. Tickets will be available at the door, but you can also purchase them by calling (330)-744-1934. The price is $25 for adults and $15 for students.
