Meet Ohio’s Miss Amazing, Andrea Emery

When someone hears the word “queen,” their mind often drifts to mythical lands, but Canfield resident Andrea Emery is a different type of queen. Andrea is the Miss Amazing Queen for Ohio. The Miss Amazing pageant gives beautiful, young women with disabilities the chance to showcase their beauty and talent. Andrea has earned the Ohio title, and is now off to nationals in Chicago August 2nd to the 4th.

Andrea Emery, is a 25 year old woman with Down Syndrome. According to the National Down Syndrome Society, about 6,000 babies in the United States are born with down syndrome each year. But these odds do not define Andrea. She has accomplished so much, and hopes to accomplish much more in the future.

Miss Amazing has given opportunities to more than 1,700 women, and my friend Andrea is one of them. Earning the Ohio Miss Amazing Queen title gave Andrea more than just a beautiful crown and sash. It gave her an opportunity to improve her social skills, build new friendships, and sparked a desire for more.

At nationals, Andrea will reach for more and hopefully have an experience of a lifetime. In Chicago Andrea will showcase her talent in a passion performance, where she will tell jokes, wear a beautiful dress, and get her makeup and hair done. She will have also an interview with a panel of judges. This will extend her communication skills to their greatest heights.

Andrea did not just wake up one day a Miss Amazing Queen, she rose to the best level of herself and worked hard to earn her title. She has completed many service hours in the community volunteering at the Down Syndrome Association of the Valley weekly and she will be making baby blankets for Akron Children’s Hospital.  She hopes to win the gold award at nationals for contributing 250 plus hours in her community. Andrea has practiced her social skills and her talents for countless hours to become the Miss Amazing Queen.

Miss Amazing gives women with disabilities the chance to be proud of what they have accomplished and what they hope to accomplish in the future. It is an opportunity to showcase their talents to the world and to help empower women.

At nationals, the contestants have “buddies” that support them and help to make sure they stay on schedule. I will be Andrea’s buddy. Andrea will do her best, and by her side I will encourage her and the other contestants I meet, to do their best in order to help extend Miss Amazing’s outstanding program.
